Season 9, Episode 10 –
On the final leg of his Belgian journey, Michael Portillo travels to Namur, capital of Wallonia, to discover a citadel dating back to the 10th century. He learns about the traditional sport of stilt jousting, still popular in the city today, and enjoys an exciting battle between the two historic teams. Travelling to Hotton in the Ardennes Forest, Michael explores a spectacular network of limestone caves discovered by chance in the 1950s and learns how they were formed over five million years. Finishing his trip in Florenville, just a couple of miles from the French border, he heads to the stunning Orval Abbey. Like a number of Belgian monasteries, it is known for its Trappist beer, and after a tour of the brewery, Michael ends his trip with a tipple.
