Season 31, Episode 06 –
Jan and Lucy have five wonderful kids: Hadley, Kenneth and triplet daughters Lola, Daisy and Amber. Complications before the triplets were born have left two of them living with nephrotic syndrome, a disease that causes kidney failure and requires them to have 70 hours of dialysis each week. The nearest hospital that offers the service they need is a four-hour round trip away, and with the girls scheduled for treatment on different days, it means Jan and Lucy are constantly in the car driving to and from the hospital. As a result, family life is suffering. But help is on hand as the DIY SOS team along with designer Laurence Llewelyn Bowen and hundreds of local volunteers arrive to extend the family home to create a home dialysis centre, enabling the girls to be treated where they live and the whole family to settle into a healthy and happier routine.

The Sweet family in Weston-super-Mare are happy and truly inspirational in their close-knit community. Louisa (14), Max (11) and Harry (6) were born healthy and family life was good until Harry was diagnosed with a genetic condition called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. He is significantly hypermobile and suffers terrible pain in his joints, unsettled sleep and chronic constipation as part of his condition. He is also being assessed for autism.

After 15 years of fostering, Stephen and Lynn Smedley were looking forward to their well-earned retirement in Carbis Bay, Cornwall. However, the dream dramatically changed when their daughter died, leaving them caring for their three grandsons. The boys, still grieving for their mum’s untimely death, are forced to share a single bedroom with a triple bunkbed. There is only one bathroom and Lynn is forced to do the ironing in the shed due to lack of space. Enter Nick Knowles and the team. Nick Knowles and his team help the Newcombe family in Kent, who need to adapt their home to be able to care for their two-year-old son Arlo, who has condition that means his lungs must be constantly supported by breathing apparatus. Trailing breathing tubes, equipment the size of tumble dryers, and no downstairs bathroom have turned their once safe home into a risky space for the family. Nick and the team have amassed a huge group of volunteers for Arlo and the family, as they set to work creating a safe and inspiring space that Arlo and his family can call home.

Season 30, Episode 05 – “The Big Build Bolton”
The nature and severity of William’s condition means he is hypersensitive to noise, and being in close proximity to his siblings is often too much for him to bear. William is unable to talk and cannot communicate his distress by any other means than crying. He finds sleeping extremely difficult and is often awake through the night, which is impacting his sisters, as he continually disturbs them. William’s severe condition also means he is not aware of danger: he will attempt to climb through the upstairs windows or turn the taps on in the upstairs bathroom causing the house to flood. He cannot be left unsupervised upstairs, both for his own safety and to avoid further damage to the house.

Season 30, Episode 00 - "Celebrating 20 Years"
Nick updates viewers on Kyle and Garry in Kent, who adopted four children, three of whom have special needs. In Manchester, site of an entire street renovation, he meets up with military veterans who were housed by DIY SOS. Nick then travels to Edinburgh to visit a Children in Need build for local charity The Yard. In London, he returns to the Grenfell community and checks in with Dale Youth Boxing Club. He also meets up with volunteers from builds across the country who have set up their own versions of DIY SOS, like Band of Builders, a charity that organises volunteer builds for builders who have fallen on hard times, and Hull for Heroes, a veterans charity with ambitious plans to build a mighty Veteran’s Village.
