DIY SOS S30E02 HDTV x264-TVC

Season 30, Episode 2 - "The Big Build - Torquay"
In Torquay, the DIY SOS team and local kind volunteers step up to help single dad Stuart, who has suffered with progressive multiple sclerosis since his 15-year-old daughter Lauren was born. Stuart - who is 6’ 7” tall – lives and sleeps in a chair in the living room. His primary carer is his mum, Grandma Lin, who is completely blind – and has been since her 20s. Amazingly, Lin has been walking across town from her rented flat to Stuart’s house, seven days a week, to cover all his personal care – without even a guide dog! Lin is beyond unique: blind, independent, charming and inspiring - an incredible carer to Stuart, and a much-needed mum to Lauren.

The build consists of bespoke care facilities for Stuart: a bedroom, physio space, a wet room, a living space, and the ability to access the entire ground floor and garden. Grandma Lin will need a specially adapted extra bedroom for blind-assisted living, and the dilapidated kitchen and bathroom need a complete renovation and redesign for the family’s needs – to bring them together at mealtimes where they can bond over Lauren’s dream of cooking together. Until now the family have physically and emotionally living apart, and that’s where DIY SOS and our volunteers can come to the rescue.

DIY SOS S29E05 HDTV x264-TVC

Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS volunteers help Simon Dobbin in Mildenhall, Suffolk - a loving father, husband and football fan whose life suddenly changed forever in March 2015. After supporting his football team at an away game, he was set upon by a gang of men in a brutal and unprovoked attack. His wife Nicole rushed from her job as a senior care worker at a nursing home to find Simon fighting for his life in intensive care, after a massive stroke and bleed on the brain. Tragically, the vicious 90-second attack had left him permanently brain damaged, paralysed and unable to walk or talk, needing round-the-clock care. In July 2017, the 13 men were convicted for a 'ferocious attack'. Nine men were guilty of violent disorder, three of conspiracy to commit violent disorder and one of assisting an offender. After many months in hospital Simon is finally home, with Nicole as his full-time carer. He sleeps downstairs in a hospital bed in the living/dining room and is washed with a bowl of water as they can't access the upstairs bathroom. There is a make-shift curtain to separate the two spaces, but this doesn't stop the reality that he's lost his dignity, along with the life he once lived. Simon's current house is now unfit for purpose - it is inhibiting his rehabilitation and a massive strain on the family's life, and so that's where the DIY SOS volunteers step up and help this family in need. Interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen adds a truly unique and hilarious addition to the kitchen design, and the local RAF assist.

DIY SOS S029E04 x264-TVC

This week, Nick Knowles's DIY SOS team, the flamboyant designer Laurence Llewelyn Bowen and volunteers pitch up in Avening, in the idyllic Cotswolds, to help project manager Ben, whose life was changed in a split second by a freak accident on holiday.

In April 2016, whilst holidaying in Cyprus with his partner Ella and daughters Iris and Olivia, Ben slipped and fell head-first into the shallow end of a pool, breaking his neck in three places. After months of treatment in Cyprus and Germany, he was finally flown back to the UK, where the Salisbury Spinal Unit made amazing progress with him over the next 12 months.

Despite his life-changing injuries there is hope: if Ben could return home, he would be reunited with his family and could even work from home again as a project manager. But for this dream to become a reality, his home needs to be adapted with front access and a two-storey extension with through-floor lift, along with everything for the bespoke care that Ben will need.

Avening is a special place. The local community here have donated their time and money to carve out the steep stone hillside for one of the two extensions and lay a concrete ramp from the road to the front door, but funds have run out. Now the DIY SOS team are joining forces with this generous community to get the build finished.

DIY SOS S29E01 720p WEB-DL H264-BTW

Season 29, Episode 01 - "The Big Build Arundel"
Amanda, mother of four and wife to local builder Vic, was training on her bicycle for an iron man when her brakes failed on Bury Hill, West Sussex. Travelling at 40 mph, she lost control and smashed into a signpost which catapulted her into bushes. The enormous impact meant Amanda broke 11 bones, punctured a lung and snapped her collarbone and her back. In vast pain, Amanda lay there motionless and described the sensation 'like my spinal fluid was leaking from my body'. It was two hours before Amanda was found by another cyclist. On arrival at A&E, she was told that she had been left paralysed. That evening, a national newspaper featured her selfie from the hospital with a beaming smile advising friends: 'I don't want to make anyone sad or upset but I'm not going to walk again', and she was determined to continue to compete as a para-athlete.With husband Vic now tending to the four children, Amanda spent the next six months at Stoke Mandeville spinal unit. Even during her darkest days at the unit, she would help to feed other patients to keep busy and to remind herself that - in her mind - it could have been worse for her. After two gruelling 12-hour back operations, she returned home in a wheelchair. Her home was now unsuitable, so that is where the DIY SOS volunteers come to the family's rescue.
